ALH77005

Martian Meteorite This Martian meteorite was found imbedded in the ice at the Allan Hills site during one of the first collecting seasons (Yanai et al. 1978). It has a rounded (slightly oblate) shape the surface was partially-ablated and roughly-polished by wind-blown ice. Examination of ALH77005 reported that it is ~55% olivine, ~35% pyroxene, ~8% maskelynite and ~2% opaques.

The olivine (Fa28) occurs as anhedral to subhedral grains up to 2 mm long. The pyroxene occurs as prismatic crystals up to 6 mm long poikilitically enclosing olivine. Maskelynite (An53) is interstitial to olivine and pyroxene. Some pyroxene has undulose extinction and some shock melting has occurred.

  • ALH84001

    Martian Meteorite ALH84001 was found during a snowmobile ride December 27th, 1984 in the Far Western Icefield of Allan Hills and was picked up (as sample number 1539) without the usual careful photography.

    The ANSMET Field Notes describe it as a “highly-shocked, grayish-green, achondrite, 90% covered with fusion crust (with the additional comment ‘Yowza-Yowza’).” Since it was recognized as the most unusual rock collected, it was the first Antarctic meteorite to be processed from the 1984-5 field season (Score 1997).

    Martian Meteorite On October 3, 1815, at about 8:00 a.m., a stone, or perhaps several, fell after detonations near the village of Chassigny on the plateau of Langres in the province of Haute-Marne, France (Pistollet 1816; Graham et al. 1985).Kevin Kichinka (2001a,b) has performed a nice service by reviewing the circumstances of the fall and telling other aspects of the Chassingy story.

    Apparently the region surrounding Chassigny has been searched for other pieces with no result.   • DHO019

    Martian Meteorite Dhofar 019 was found in Oman in January 2000 (Grossman 2000). It weighs 1,056 grams and has no fusion crust. Figure 1 shows the main mass and the location of the saw cut providing the first material studied. Cahill et al. (2002) find that Dho 019 is heterogeneous with some apparent layering.

    Dhofar 019 is found to be rather anomalous when compared with other Martian rocks. It has the oldest age, the greatest exposure to cosmic rays, highest 18O and lowest siderophile content. The crystallization age of Dho019 is 575 m.y. with a 20 m.y. exposure to cosmic rays.

  • DHO378

    Martian Meteorite

    Ikeda et al. (2002) first reported another Martian meteorite (Dho378) from Oman (found in an area near Dho019). Dho378 is somewhat similar to Los Angeles, except that the plagioclase has been shocked to Plag-glass, instead of maskelynite (Ikeda et al. 2006).

    Dho378 is reported to have "a doleritic or microgabbroic texture, and grain sizes of the main minerals about 1 mm"(Ikeda et al. 2002). It has a fresh black fusion crust on one side and has been highly shocked.

    Martian Meteorite

    EETA79001 is the largest stony meteorite returned by the 1979 ANSMET expedition (Cassidy and Rancitelli 1982). It was found on the ice at the Elephant Moraine location near Reckling Peak Victoria Land, Antarctica

    This sample is especially important, because glass inclusions in it were found to contain rare-gas and nitrogen compositions and isotopic ratios matching those of the Martian atmosphere as determined by the Viking spacecraft (Bogard and Johnson 1983a; Becker and Pepin 1984; Ott and Begemann 1985b; Garrison and Bogard 1998)...

    Martian Meteorite

    Ksar Ghilane 002 is a Martian basaltic rock found in Tunisia at a "watering hole for tourists". It is reported to be similar to Los Angeles

    Ksar Ghilane 002 has a basaltic texture. It is somewhat weathered, and has lost its fusion crust. Roszjar et al. (2012) determined the mineral mode and grain size (4 - 5 mm). The mineralogy is dominated by abundant plagioclase and pyroxene; both highly zoned.

  • LEW88516

    Martian Meteorite

    Lewis Cliff sample LEW88516 is petrologically similar to ALH77005 (Satterwhite and Mason 1991; Treiman et al. 1994) and Y793605 (Kojima et al. 1997). However, it is not paired, because it has a distinctly different terrestrial exposure age.

    LEW88516 was a small nondescript meteorite that was not recognized as an achondrite until it was broken open Hence, it waited 2 years to be processed in numerical order. According to Satterwhite and Mason (1991), LEW88516 had a “pitted and mostly shiny fusion crust over 80 % of the surface.”

  • Los Angeles

    Martian Meteorite

    Bob Verish found two stones, with attached fusion crust, weighing 452.6 g and 245.4 g respectively, while he was cleaning out a box of rocks in his backyard (in Los Angeles, California). He took them to UCLA where he learned they were from Mars!

    Los Angeles has a coarse-grained (2-4 mm), basaltic texture and mineralogy closely resembling that of QUE94201 and the coarse-grained portions of Zagami (Rubin et al. 2000; Mikouchi 2001). Xirouchakis et al. (2002) describe the texture of Los Angeles as that of a microgabbro, dominated by relatively large anhedral to subhedral grains of pyroxene (2 mm) and subhedral to euhedral plagioclase.

    The NASA Mars Exploration Program supplemented the 2003-2004 ANSMET expedition in the hope of improving the chance of finding additional samples of Mars, and, as luck would have it, a large nakhlite was recovered from the blue ice on Dec 15, 2003 in the Miller Range,

  • Nakhla

    Martian Meteorite

    Multiple fragments of the Nakhla meteorite were seen to fall as a shower in the hamlets surrounding the village of El-Nakhla, El-Baharîya in Egypt (near Alexandria) on June 28th, 1911 at 9:00 a.m. Dr. W. F. Hume, Director of the Geological Survey of Egypt, personally visited the site and collected both the evidence of eyewitnesses of the fall and about a dozen specimens including the largest known fragments.

    The exact strewn field for the Nakhla shower is unmapped, but is said to be within a diameter of 4.5 km (Prior 1912). Kevin Kichinka has documented the circumstances of the Nakhla fall (Kichinka 1998 a, b).

  • NWA2626

    Martian Meteorite

    NWA 2626 was purchased in Morocco in 2004 by Mike Farmer and Jim Strope. It is a small shocked fragment of olivine-orthopyroxene shergottite. According to Irving et al. (2005) it is not paired with other Martian meteorites found in North Africa. It has a thin (mm) weathering rind, but the interior is said to be unaltered. It has not been dated. .

    NWA 2626 is a very phenocryst-rich rock with a basaltic-textured mesostasis made up of intergrown pyroxene and shocked plagioclase (maskelynite). Large olivine phenocrysts are zoned. Elongate, prismatic, phenocrysts of orthopyroxene are aligned, as in a flow pattern (Irving et al. 2005).

    Martian Meteorite

    NWA 480 was found in November 2000 in Morocco (Barrat et al. 2001, 2002; Grossman and Zipfel 2001). It was almost completely covered with fusion crust and appeared to be rather fresh with only a few spots of weathering products on the surface.

    Apparently, NWA 480, was sold to the National Centre for Space Studies (CNES), where it is “being put to use to prepare for analysis of samples returned by planned missions to Mars” (according to Philippe Gillet) and is being studied by Consortium Théodore Monod.

  • NWA817

    Martian Meteorite

    NWA817 was found in Morocco in November 2000 (Sautter et al. 2000; Grossman and Zipfel 2001) by Bruno Fectay and Carine Bidaut. NWA817 is similar to, but different from, the other nakhlites (Mikouchi and Miyamoto 2001).

    NWA817 is an olivine-bearing clinopyroxenite with a cumulate texture (Sautter et al. 2002). The intercumulus mesostasis is made of feldspars including trace amounts of sulfide droplets, Ti-magnetite and acicular pyroxene.

  • NWA856

    Martian Meteorite

    Jambon et al. (2001, 2002) describe the discovery in March 2001 of another shergottite from Morocco. This sample was originally referred to as “Djel Ibone” and is officially known as NWA 856 (Russell et al. 2002).

    This meteorite is a fine-grained basalt (figure 1) with gray acicular pyroxene phenocrysts up to 12 mm long (Jambon et al. 2002). Augite and pigeonite form as separate crystals.

    NWA998

    Martian Meteorite

    Irving et al. (2002) reported that a piece of a nakhlite was acquired in Morocco in September 2001. It is 1.3 b.y. old, with an exposure to cosmic rays of ~ 11 m.y. It is the most crystalline of the Nakhlites, which are all somehow related.

    The texture of NWA 998 is that of a hypabyssal, adcumulate igneous rock. According to Irving et al. (2002), the crystallization sequence was olivine, orthopyroxene, titanomagnetite, augite, apatite and plagioclase.

  • NWA1068, NWA1110, NWA1183, NWA1775, NWA2373, NWA2969

    Martian Meteorite

    NWA 1068 was found in the Moroccan Sahara in April 2001 by a local team called "La Memoire de la Terre" and given the field name "Louise Michel". It has no fusion crust and is greenish-brown in color (figure 1). A main mass (522g) and 22 small fragments were recovered (Barrat et al. 2002b). NWA 1110 (several fragments, 118 grams) was purchased from meteorite dealers in Morocco in September 2001 and appears to be paired with NWA 1068 (Irving and Kuehner)

    In texture, mineralogy and bulk chemistry, NWA 1068 appears similar to other basaltic shergottites, EETA79001, Dar al Gani 476, Sayh al Uhaymir 005 and Dhofar 019, but the REE pattern of NWA 1068 is not depleted in light REE and is instead very similar to that of Shergotty.

  • NWA1195

    Martian Meteorite

    Irving et al. (2002) report that a 50 gram stone with a distinctive thin weathering rind was found in March 2002 near Safsaf, Morocco. Careful searching led to the discovery of a second, larger piece of this same rock (265 grams). NWA1195 is 347 m.y. old with an exposure to cosmic rays for 1.1 m.y.

    Euhedral olivine megacrysts (up to 4 mm) are set in a groundmass of low-Ca pyroxene and maskelynite, with minor chromite, pyrrhotite and merrillite. This sample appears to have mineral compositions similar to that of the Dar al Gani shergottites. Symes et al. (2008) report that NWA1195 is "an olivine- orthopyroxene-phyric shergottite" and give a description - but no mode.

    NWA2800

    Martian Meteorite

    Bunch et al. (2008) announced another large basaltic rock from Mars - NWA2800 - that appears to be similar to the Los Angeles specimens. It has a coarse ophitic texture with preferred orintation of intrgrown elongate grains of plagioclase and pyroxene. It is apparently "complete and lightly weathered with significant desert ablation".

    Interstitial patches of late-stage residuum are adjacent to patches of symplectite (presumed breakdown of pyroxferroite). The late-stage minerals include silica- plagioclase graphic intergrowths, fayalite and K-spar while the complex sympletite intrgrowths include fayalite, pyroxene, silica with minor phosphates, opaques, sulfides and silica glass (Bunch et al. 2008).

    Abstracts by Wittke et al. (2006) and Bunch et al. (2008) describe a shower of small (~ 100 g each) bits and pieces of basaltitc shergottite (there may be over a hundred pieces). Many have a fresh fusion crust (partial), a basaltic texture and the characteristic glass pockets and thin black glass veins such as are seen in Zagami etc.

    According to Wittke et al. (2006), NWA2975 is a fresh, medium-grained, subophitic to granular hypsbyssal basalt with intergrown prismatic pyroxene and plagioclase grains up to 3 mm long. The hand specimen also exhibits vesicular black glass veins up to 3 mm wide and glass pockets up to 6 mm (figure 4).

    NWA2990, NWA5960, NWA6234, NWA6710

    Martian Meteorite

    NWA 2990 is a fine-grained, olivine-rich, shergottite with a nearly complete fusion crust on two sides (Bunch et al. 2009). It appears to be relatively fresh (unweathered). It is apparently paired with 6710, 5960 and 6234 (Irving et al. 2011. They are apparently obtained from Mali (Meteoritical Bulletin). .

    The chemical composition of NWA 2990 determined by Korotev was reported in Bunch et al. (2009). The REE pattern indicates it is "enriched" in large ion lithophile elements. The bulk composition of 6234 has significantly higher FeO and MgO and significantly lower SiO2, Al2O3 and CaO compared with NWA 2990 (Filiberto et al. 1012)..

    NWA3171

    Martian Meteorite

    NWA 3171 is a 506 gram stone, partially broken, partially covered with fresh fusion crust. It was purchased in 2004 by A.A. Aaronson for D.A. Gregory and is apparently from western Algeria. It is a basaltic rock very similar to Shergotty and Zagami. It has unusual oxygen isotopic composition

    This Martian basalt consists of approximately equal amounts of pyroxene and plagioclase. Accessory phases include ulvospinel, ilmenite, chlorapatite, merrillite, pyrrhotite, Na-K-Al-Si glass, silica, and rare baddeleyite. Rare calcite, barite and minor rust staining are present in this dessert find (Irving et al. 2004).

    NWA4222

    Martian Meteorite

    Moggi-Cecchi et al. (2009) gave the following description of NWA4222: "NWA 4222 shows a cumulitic fine-grained texture consisting of very large rounded phenocrysts of brown olivine set in a fine grained basaltic groundmass of twinned tabular pyroxene crystals surrounded by interstitial glassy matrix".

    Opaque phase include chromite, titanium chromite and ilmenite. Merrillite and pyrrhotite are also reported. Evidence for shock includes strong mosaicism, planer features in olivine, glassy plagioclase and glass "fringes" around mafic phases.

    NWA4468

    Martian Meteorite

    Greg and Adam Hupe (2006) describe the acquisition of a large, round basaltic shergottite with a nearly complete fusion crust in Layounne, Morocco (see Meteortical Bulletin). It is 179 m.y. old, but a CRE age has not been reported.

    NWA4468 is described by Irving et al. (2007) and was made official by Connolly H.C. et al. (2007). It is coarse-grained with large pyroxene oikocrysts (0.2 x 1 cm), surrounding olivine and chromite grains, set in an interstitial matrix of olivine, pyroxene, plagioclase, opaque minerals and phosphates.

    NWA4480

    Martian Meteorite

    NWA 4480 is a fresh ellipsoidal stone with nearly complete dark brown fusion crust (figure 1). It was purchased by G. Hupe in Tagounite, Morocco in 2006, but is thought to be from Algeria..

    The texture of NWA 4480 is different from the other shergottites. Irving et al. (2007) describe the matrix of NWA 4480 as a fine-grained basalt with grain size about 0.15 mm, which includes "glomerocrysts" with larger grain size (0.5-0.8 mm). The matrix consists of plagioclase laths, olivine, complexly-zoned pyroxene (augite cores, pigeonite rims), Ti-chromite, ilmenite, merrillite and silica .

    Martian Meteorite

    Irving et al. (2008) reported on a small ultramafic shergottite with dramatic shock features . It was found in Morocco in 2001 (Connolly et al. 2007). It has a fusion crust on one side, and is cut by several veins of glass, produced by shock. It appears to be a new kind of rock from Mars. The thick glass vein may from a preexisting shock event on Mars.

    Irving et al. referred to NWA4797 as a "wehrlite", which has special significance in petrology. NWA4797 is primarily olivine and clinopyroxene. Large oikocrysts of zoned clinopyroxene enclose mm-sized chadocrysts of olivine (figure 2). Interstitial regions have been to shocked to vesicular glass, with very small birefringent microlites of plagioclase.

    Martian Meteorite

    NWA5029 was purchased in Morocco in 2003. It is covered with about 60% fusion crust. The interior has a basaltic texture. The CRE is 2.5 m.y. The pyroxene in NWA5029 is elongate and euhedral to subhedral (up to 5 x 0.5 mm). Mg-rich pigeonite cores are mantled by thin ragged augite (Mikouchi and Barrat 2009).

    Some pyroxene zones outward to Ferich. Interstitial plagioclase laths have been converted to maskelynite by shock. Minor phases found in mesostasis include: merrillite, apatite, silica, ilmenite, chromite and sulfide (Mikouchi and Barrat 2009).

    Martian Meteorite

    NWA5298 was found near Bir Gandouz, northwest Africa in 2008. It has a brown weathered surface without fusion crust. It is one of the most oxidized of the Martian meteorites, with magnetite as a primary phase.

    Irving and Kuehner (2008) described NWA5298 as composed mainly of intergrown prismatic grains of zoned pyroxene up to 1.5 mm and lath-shaped regions of vesicular material of plagioclase composition. Accessory minerals are titanomagnetite, ilmenite, silica, merrillite, apatite, pyrrhotite, fayalite and baddeleyite.

    Martian Meteorite

    NWA 5718 is a fresh stone with a nice fusion crust purchased in Erfoud, Morocco by Daryl Pitt. It is thought to have been found in the same strewn field in Algeria as NWA 2975 etc. .

    A sawcut through NWA5718 shows that it is fine grained with a few melt pockets and glass veins. Texture ranges from ophitic to subophitic and granular with some preferred orientation of pyroxene grains. Accessory phases include ulvospinel, ilmenite, pyrrhotite, merrillite and small pockets of Krich glass.

    Martian Meteorite

    NWA5789 is a fresh olivine basalt with a very fresh fusion crust. Three pieces that fit together are known to exist. NWA5789 is ultramafic and has high Mg/Fe ratio in early-formed olivine and pyroxene. The initial Nd isotopes and the REE pattern group this sample with the depleted shergottites. Ages have not been reported.

    Irving et al. (2010) and Gross et al. (2010, 2011) have reported on the petrography of NWA5789. They report it has a porphyritic texture with numerous olivine megacrysts and smaller pyroxene, olivine phenocrysts set in a fine-grained crystalline mesostasis.

    NWA 5790 was found in Mauritania; apparently as two pieces. There could be more! It apparently lacks fusion crust, and has many crevices filled with terrestrial contamination. It has been dated at 1.38 b.y. with exposure to cosmic rays for ~ 7 m.y. Its terrestrial age has yet to be determined .

    Jambon et al. (2010) reported the texture, along with mineral and mesostasis compositio. Olivine phenorcrysts are large and zoned. Euhedral augite phenocrysts have sector zoning with iron-rich rims. The mesostasis has numerous dendritic crystals of Ti-magnetite, trace Na-rich plagioclase, even K-spar. Cl-rich amphibole is trapped in melt inclusions...

    Martian Meteorite

    NWA5990 is a small round stone found on Hamada du Draa, Morocco in 2009. It is a fine-grained diabase that is ~ 400 m.y. old with an exposure to cosmic rays of about 2.1 m.y. It may be unique, but has been compared with QUE94201.

    Irving et al. (2012) reported the discovery, modal mineralogy and petrography of NWA5990. It has a fine-grained diabasic texture. The plagioclase is shock melted. The pyroxene is more homogeneous than for other shergottites. Besides olivine, pyroxene and plagioclase, it has chromite-ulvospinel, pyrrhotite, merrillite and rare magnetite.

    NWA6162 is a small rounded stone completely covered with thin black fusion crust. It was found in 2010 near Lbirat in southern Morocco and purchased by Stefan Ralew and Martin Altmann (Meteoritical Bulletin). It contains vugs with black shock-melted glass.

    The interior of NWA6162 is fresh and unaltered. The texture consists of large (3 mm) anhedral magacrysts of olivine set in a fine-grained groundmass of intergrown pigeonite and maskelynite with accessory chromite, pyrrhotite and merrillite (Kuehner et al. 2011). It has prominent vugs with black glass (probably shock glass). Mineral chemistry is reported in Meteoritical Bulletin

    NWA6342 Listed: 20/04/2017.

    Martian Meteorite

    NWA6342 is a single, unweathered stone that was found in Algeria in 2010. Only patches of fusion crust remain. It is a poikilitic basalt that has been highly shocked. It has a CRE age of 3.8 - 5. 1 m.y.

    The interior of NWA6342 is dark green with pale green patches. The sample is heterogeneous with both poikilitic and non-poikilitic regions. There are also patches and veins of vesicular shock melt glass (Irving et al. 2011). In the poikilitic areas of NWA6342, large oikocrysts of pigeonite enclose rounded chadocrysts of olivine and accessory minerals (merrillite, feldspar, chromite, ilmenite and sulfide).

    Numerous pieces of another large shergottite were found near the river Qued Touflit in 2011 (Meteoritical Bulletin). They range in size up to 700 grams and are individually covered with fusion crust. Some pieces are getting new numbers (e.g. NWA7258). A thin patch of rusty material is found beneath the fusion crust, but otherwise the specimens are not badly weathered.

    First reports are that NWA6963 is very like Shergotty (Wilson et al. 2012; Warren et al. 2012). It has a subophitic texture with intergrown pyroxene and maskelynite. Grain size is reported as ~1-4 mm, but there are obvious mineral laths up to 1 cm in slabs. There are two pyroxene trends, just like those in Shergotty.

    NWA7032 is a relatively coarse-grained shergottite found in southern Morocco in 2011 (Meteoritical Bulletin). It has a fusion crust on one side and a broken surface on the other - there may be more of it

    Irving et al. (2011) give a brief description. The grain size is about 1 mm and the minerals are relatively homogenous (chemically unzoned). The texture is unique for Martian meteorites. It is equigranular. The sample is rich in olivine and pyroxene both pigeonite and augite.

    NWA7042 Listed: 21/04/2017.

    Martian Meteorite

    A large stone was found in Morocco in 2011 and purchased by Moroccan dealers. It has since been proven to be Martian with distinctive Mn/Fe ratios in pyroxene and oxygen isotopes (Meteoritical Bulletin).

    Irving et al. (2012) have briefly described NWA7042 and picture the texture. It consists of chemically-zoned blocky pyroxene and olivine with interstitial leaves of intergrown plagioclase and Fe- pyroxene. The plagioclase is now maskelynite.

    NWA7257 Listed: 21/04/2017.

    Martian Meteorite

    NWA7257 was purchased at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show in 2012. It is said to be from NWA, but who knows. It has a basaltic texture, albeit rather mafic, and it has the most REE of all the enriched shergottites. The sample had a weathered brown surface, with partial fusion crust.

    Martian Meteorite

    QUE94201 was found on a glacial moraine where it "looked different". A search for other pieces proved unsuccessful (Lofgren, personal communication). Five sides of QUE94201 are rounded with remnant fusion crust, while one side appears freshly broken. The interior is coarse-grained, crystalline and glassy (Score and Mason 1995).

    QUE94201 is a basalt apparently similar to the dark, mottled lithology (DML) of Zagami (McSween et al. 1996) as well as "lithology B" of EETA 79001 (Mikouchi et al. 1998). However, the phosphorous content of QUE94201 is high and the REE pattern is strongly depleted in light rare earth elements.

    In November 1999, five macroscopically identical stores were recovered at two sites about 1800 meters apart in Oman, at a location called Sayh al Uhaymir. These were labeled SaU 005 and SaU 008 and have a combined weight of 9923 grams (Zipfel 2000). Additional pieces, labeled SaU 051 and SaU 094, were recovered by a Swiss expedition in January 2001

    SaU basaltic shergottites are very similar in mineralogy, texture, chemistry and exposure age to the DaG shergottites from Libya, but terrestrial weathering (caliche) appears to be much less pronounced (Zipfel 2000; Dreibus et al. 2000).

    Martian Meteorite

    The Tissint meteorite was seen to fall as a shower over Morocco on July 18, 2011 (Chennaoui Aoudjehane 2012; Irving 2012). Several large pieces (over 1 kg.) and many smaller fragments were found, starting in October 2011 (a total of over 12 kg.). All had nice black fusion crust, and appeared to be very fresh and unaltered.

    The area is being continually searched; so carefully, that other meteorites should be found as well (Ibhi 2012). Tissint is a picritic basalt from Mars that is about 600 m.y. old and took about 1.1 m.y. to get here (based on cosmic ray exposure). There is so much of it, and it is so fresh, that every possible experiment will probably be performed on it, although it appears to be a rather typical Martian basalt. Stay tuned -

    Martian Meteorite

    Martian meteorite Y-980459 was collected near Minami- Yamato Nunataks by the Japanese field party in 1998. Y-980459 was initially announced in Japanese Meteorite Newsletter #11 (2002) and is listed in Meteoritical Bulletin 87, appendix 2 (Russell et al. 2003). Y-980459 has been the subject of an integrated consortium study (Misawa 2003, 2004).

    Y-980459 is a porphyritic basalt with devitrified glassy matrix and no plagioclase (nor masklynite). Yellow olivine phenocrysts are apparent in hand specimen and prominent in thin section. Y-980459 is not only very mafic in composition, but also appears to be very reduced and perhaps "primitive" (McKay et al. 2004).

    Martian Meteorite

    Zagami fell on October 3, 1962 about 0.75 miles from Zagami Rock, Katsina Province, Nigeria (Graham et al. 1985). In 1985, the main mass was with the Geological Survey of Nigeria in Kaduna. About 1988, Rober Hagg (meteorite dealer) obtained a large piece of Zagami. Since then, the whole specimen has apparently been cut up and "distributed".

    Both Shergotty and Zagami are texturally and mineralogically similar to terrestrial diabases (although plagioclase has been shocked to maskelynite), but quite distinct petrologically and chemically from the rest of the basaltic achondrites (Stolper et al. 1979). From what is now known about Zagami, it appears to have been made up of three inter-related basaltic lithologies and minor shock-melted glass (McCoy et al. 1999).
