Meteorites in history

Claxton, 1984: the mailbox meteorite

A space rock that flattened a letterbox in Georgia.

On 10 December 1984, a stone fell near Claxton, Georgia, and smashed through a roadside mailbox, landing in the grass beside it.

The meteorite, about 1.4 kg, is an L6 ordinary chondrite. The dented mailbox became a collector's item in its own right and is one of the best-known objects ever damaged by a meteorite.
