Meteorite law in Algeria
Searching by foreigners and export are forbidden; Algerian heritage law is used to protect meteorites, and scientific institutions are cautious about Algerian material.
Belongs to the state
Algeria's Saharan regions are rich in meteorites, but the government does not allow foreigners to prospect for them and does not permit their export. Algerian heritage law gives the state broad ownership of the national heritage, and Algerian scientists have worked to build a national collection.
Because Algerian meteorites cannot be exported legally, many reach the market labelled as finds from other countries. Museums and journals increasingly ask for proof of where a meteorite was found. Buyers should avoid material that is, or may be, from Algeria without clear legal papers.
This is general information to help you ask the right questions, not legal advice. Laws change and their details matter, and this summary was last reviewed in 2026. Before you search, buy, sell or export a meteorite, check the current law with the authorities of the country concerned or a qualified lawyer. See meteorite law by country.
