Meteorite law in Brazil

No law regulates meteorites yet. A bill introduced in 2020 would require registration and a share of every find for Brazilian science.

No specific law known

Brazil has no regulation for meteorites, so they can be bought and sold freely, and scientists have complained that important falls leave the country before they can be studied. A bill introduced in 2020 would create a national registration certificate, require every meteorite found in Brazil to be registered within 180 days, let the finder keep and sell it, but transfer about a fifth of its mass to a certified Brazilian research institution, and allow export only after registration. Scientists helped revise the text, and it has been debated in Congress; check whether it has become law.

In the meantime, sharing a sample with the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro or a university is the responsible course.

Not legal advice

This is general information to help you ask the right questions, not legal advice. Laws change and their details matter, and this summary was last reviewed in 2026. Before you search, buy, sell or export a meteorite, check the current law with the authorities of the country concerned or a qualified lawyer. See meteorite law by country.
