Meteorite law in Niger
No law written for meteorites, but in 2025 the government opened an inquiry into how a record Martian meteorite left the country.
No specific law known
Niger's government has acknowledged that it has no specific law on meteorites. In July 2025 a 24.7-kilogram Martian meteorite, Northwest Africa 16788, which had been found in the Agadez region in 2023, sold at auction in New York for more than 4 million US dollars. Days later the government announced an investigation into whether it had been exported illegally, pointing to Morocco's efforts to reclaim its meteorites as a precedent.
The case shows how quickly the legal picture can change. Anyone buying a meteorite from Niger should keep full records of its origin and export.
