First found in a rock from space
Chladniite was described in 1994 from silicate inclusions in the Carlton iron meteorite of Texas. It is named after Ernst Chladni, who argued in 1794 that meteorites fall from space.
What it is
Chladniite is a phosphate related in structure to fillowite-group minerals on Earth.
Where it is found
It occurs in silicate inclusions of Carlton, an iron in the IAB complex, alongside brianite and other phosphates.
How it is recognised
It is colourless and identified by its chemistry and structure.
