Grossite
A calcium aluminium oxide found in rare, extremely refractory inclusions in CH and CR chondrites.
Key facts
- Formula
- CaAl4O7
- Family
- Oxides
- Crystal system
- Monoclinic
What it is
Grossite is an oxide of calcium and aluminium, poorer in calcium than hibonite. It forms only at very high temperatures and is known from a few unusual rocks on Earth as well as from meteorites.
Where it is found
Grossite-rich CAIs are found in CH and CB chondrites and some CR and CO chondrites. Many have little or no trace of aluminium-26, which suggests they formed very early or in a separate region of the disc.
How it is recognised
It is colourless and identified by its chemistry and crystal structure under an electron microscope.

Grossite-rich inclusions are among the most refractory objects in meteorites.
