Hexamolybdenum was described in 2014 from a refractory inclusion in Allende. Its name refers to its hexagonal structure and its main element, molybdenum.
What it is
Hexamolybdenum is a metal alloy dominated by molybdenum with ruthenium, iron, iridium and osmium. These metals condense at very high temperatures, so they formed nuggets in the solar nebula before most silicates.
Where it is found
It was found as a sub-micrometre grain in an ultra-refractory inclusion in Allende. Refractory metal nuggets of this kind are common in CAIs.
How it is recognised
It is identified by electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction.
Did you know?
Refractory metal nuggets in CAIs can contain osmium, iridium and platinum in proportions close to the Sun's.
These nuggets are among the first solids to have formed in the Solar System.
