First found in a rock from space
Kangite was described in 2013 from an ultra-refractory inclusion in Allende. It is named after Kang, a Chinese word linked to health and peace.
What it is
Kangite is an oxide dominated by scandium with titanium and other refractory elements. It is related to minerals expected to condense at the highest temperatures from the solar gas.
Where it is found
It occurs as tiny grains with davisite and panguite in ultra-refractory inclusions of Allende.
How it is recognised
It is identified by electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction.

Did you know?
Scandium is so rare that a mineral made mostly of it is remarkable.
Did you know?
Allende has been studied intensively since 1969, yet still yields new minerals.
