The Geological Survey of India is the official custodian of meteorites found or fallen in India, and it has built up a collection since the 19th century, long displayed in the geology galleries of the Indian Museum in Kolkata. In 2024 it opened a dedicated meteorite gallery at its headquarters in the city.
The collection holds about 640 meteorites, including more than a hundred from Indian falls and finds. Among them is Shergotty, which fell in Bihar in 1865 and gave its name to the shergottites, the most common family of Martian meteorites. The oldest fall in the collection is a piece of Ensisheim, which fell in France in 1492, and new Indian falls are added as they are recovered.
