Oscar Monnig, a Fort Worth businessman and amateur astronomer, collected meteorites for most of the 20th century, chasing reports of falls and buying finds from farmers across Texas and beyond. He gave his collection to Texas Christian University, and it has kept growing since.

The Monnig Meteorite Collection now holds specimens from a few thousand meteorites, with a special strength in meteorites from Texas. The Monnig Meteorite Gallery, opened at the university in 2003, shows specimens from every major group and explains how meteorites are classified. The collection is used for research and is lent to scientists elsewhere.
