Western Australia has produced more meteorites than any other Australian state. Its huge dry plains, especially the limestone of the Nullarbor, preserve meteorites well and show dark stones clearly. The Western Australian Museum in Perth holds the state's collection, one of the largest in the southern hemisphere, and has long run expeditions to find more.
Its biggest specimens are masses of Mundrabilla, an iron found on the Nullarbor whose two largest pieces weigh about 12 and 5 tonnes, among the largest meteorites in Australia. Under Western Australian law, meteorites found in the state belong to the government and must be handed to the museum.
