Why 1795 matters
On 13 December 1795 a stone of about 25 kilograms fell at Wold Cottage in Yorkshire, close to a farm worker. It is still the largest single stone seen to fall in Britain, and its chemical analysis a few years later helped prove that meteorites have a chemistry unlike that of ordinary Earth rocks.

A witnessed fall is a meteorite seen or heard coming down and then picked up, as opposed to a find, which is discovered later with no record of its arrival. The mass is the total recovered, often from many pieces.
