How can I use the glossary and questions on this site in lessons?
Use them for starter definitions, research tasks, reading comprehension, quiz writing and homework, choosing entries by level from beginner to expert.
The glossary and questions sections on this site are designed to support learning at different levels.
Glossary by level. Each glossary term is labelled beginner, explorer, enthusiast or expert. For younger pupils, choose beginner and explorer terms. For older pupils and students, enthusiast and expert terms provide depth. The search box helps pupils find terms quickly.
Starters. Display a term and its short definition at the start of a lesson, and ask pupils to predict what it means before revealing it.
Research tasks. Give pairs a list of related terms, such as chondrule, matrix, chondrite and petrologic type, and ask them to use the glossary to build a concept map showing how they connect.
Reading comprehension. Use a question-and-answer page as a short reading passage. Pupils summarise the answer in their own words, list three key facts, or write questions for a partner.
Quiz writing. Pupils read several entries and write multiple-choice questions with one correct answer and plausible wrong answers, which deepens understanding.
Children's questions. The questions written for children are suited to reading aloud in primary classes or to independent reading for confident readers.
Teacher questions. The teacher questions offer lesson ideas, activities and background knowledge.
Homework. Ask pupils to read an entry at home and explain it to a family member.
Start here course. The four-level course offers structured lessons with quizzes that can be used for revision or independent study.
Always combine reading with discussion and hands-on activities for the best learning.
