What are good discussion questions about meteorites?

The short answer

Questions about ownership, selling, Antarctica, planetary defence and evidence for life spark debate and develop reasoning skills.

Meteorites raise ethical and scientific questions that make excellent discussion or debate topics.

Ownership. If a meteorite falls on a farmer's field, who should own it: the farmer, the finder, the nation or science? Compare the laws of different countries, some of which treat meteorites as national heritage.

Selling. Should scientifically important meteorites be sold to private collectors? Some argue sales fund finding more meteorites that would otherwise weather away; others argue that sales can lose specimens to science and encourage illegal export.

Antarctica. Antarctic meteorites are collected only by scientific programmes. Is this the right approach for other places, such as deserts?

Planetary defence. If an asteroid threatened one country, who should decide how to respond? Should nations share the cost? What are the risks of trying to deflect an asteroid?

Life in meteorites. What would count as convincing evidence of life in a meteorite? Use the debate about ALH 84001 to discuss extraordinary claims, contamination and alternative explanations.

Space mining. Should companies be allowed to mine asteroids for metals or water? Who owns resources in space?

Science and belief. In the eighteenth century, many scientists dismissed reports of falling stones. Why? How should scientists treat unusual eyewitness reports today?

Techniques such as think-pair-share, structured debates with assigned roles, or 'walking debates', where pupils move along a line from agree to disagree, help everyone take part. Encourage pupils to support opinions with evidence.
