What is the most famous meteorite?

The short answer

There is no single answer, but famous ones include Hoba, the biggest; ALH 84001 from Mars; Allende and Murchison, full of clues to the early Solar System; and Winchcombe in Britain.

Lots of meteorites are famous for different reasons. Here are some of the stars.

Hoba, in Namibia, is the biggest single meteorite ever found. It is a slab of iron weighing about 60 tonnes, and it still lies where it landed.

ALH 84001 is a meteorite from Mars found in Antarctica in 1984. In 1996, scientists announced it might contain signs of tiny ancient life. Most scientists now think not, but it made headlines around the world.

Allende, which fell in Mexico in 1969, contains some of the oldest solid things in the Solar System, about 4,567 million years old.

Murchison, which fell in Australia in 1969, contains amino acids, the building blocks of proteins.

Ensisheim fell in France in 1492 and is the oldest meteorite in Europe whose fall was seen and which is still kept today.

Chelyabinsk fell in Russia in 2013 after a huge fireball that was filmed by many cameras.

Winchcombe fell in England in 2021, landing on a driveway. It contains water similar to Earth's oceans.

Willamette, in a museum in New York, is the largest meteorite found in the United States and is sacred to the Clackamas people.
