What would I see if I stood on an asteroid?
You would see a rocky, dusty, cratered ground under a black sky, with the Sun shining brightly. Gravity would be so weak you could jump into space!
Imagine your spaceship landing on a small asteroid. What would it be like?
Looking around, you would see grey or dark ground covered in dust, pebbles and boulders, some as big as houses. Spacecraft pictures of asteroids such as Itokawa, Ryugu and Bennu show surfaces jumbled with rocks. You would see craters of all sizes. The sky would be completely black, even in daytime, because there is no air to spread the sunlight around, and you could see stars and the Sun at the same time.
The strangest thing would be gravity. A small asteroid has very weak gravity. On a body the size of Bennu, about half a kilometre across, you would weigh about as much as a feather does on Earth. If you jumped, you might float away into space and never come back! Astronauts would need to tie themselves on or hold on to the ground.
There would be no sound, because sound needs air to travel. Days would be short: Bennu spins once every 4 hours and 18 minutes. The ground could be scorching hot in sunlight and freezing in shadow. It would be an amazing place to visit, but you would need a very good spacesuit.
