Hoba, the biggest meteorite

The heaviest meteorite ever found is so big it has never been moved.

In 1920, a farmer in Namibia, in southern Africa, was ploughing his field. Suddenly, his plough hit something hard and stopped.

He dug around it and found a big, flat slab of dark metal. It was a meteorite!

It is called Hoba, after the farm where it was found. It is about as long and wide as a small bedroom, and nearly a metre thick.

Hoba is made of iron and nickel metal. It weighs about 60 tonnes. That is about as heavy as ten elephants.

It is so heavy that nobody has ever moved it. It still lies where it landed, long ago. Today visitors can walk around it and touch it.

Scientists think Hoba is a piece of the metal centre of an asteroid that broke apart.

Did you know?

Hoba did not leave a crater. Scientists think the air slowed it down a great deal before it landed.
