How can I assess pupils' understanding of meteorites?
Use quick quizzes, concept maps, explain-a-diagram tasks, practical write-ups and misconception checks to see what pupils know and can apply.
A range of assessment methods helps teachers check knowledge, understanding and skills.
Starter and exit quizzes. Short multiple-choice or true-or-false questions check key facts: the difference between meteoroid, meteor and meteorite; where most meteorites come from; why meteorites are often magnetic. Repeating the same quiz at the start and end of a topic shows progress.
Concept maps. Pupils link key words, such as asteroid, meteoroid, atmosphere, fusion crust, crater and chondrite, with labelled arrows explaining the connections. This reveals how well they understand relationships, not just definitions.
Explain a diagram. Give a diagram of a meteor's journey or a crater cross-section, and ask pupils to annotate it or explain it in their own words.
Practical write-ups. Crater or density investigations can be assessed on planning, fair testing, data presentation, conclusions and evaluation.
Application questions. Ask pupils to apply knowledge to new situations: 'A farmer finds a heavy black stone in a field after a fireball. What should she do, and how could scientists check it?'
Misconception probes. Present statements such as 'Meteorites are always hot when they land' and ask pupils to agree or disagree with reasons.
Extended tasks. Older pupils can write an essay or presentation on how meteorites tell us about the early Solar System, assessed for accuracy, use of evidence and clarity.
Feedback should focus on next steps, for example asking pupils to correct a misconception or add evidence.
